Reversible goldilocks three bears stuffed11/22/2023 The skill of the craftsman, the obvious care taken by set designer Emily L. John Wright, the three-foot-high bears' house - with real turf growing on top - and accompanying furniture and decorations, were all made by hand. The rear dust-jacket flap gives a number of fascinating details about the creation of the artwork, which uses handcrafted dolls, costumes and sets to great effect. While I enjoyed Child's retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears immensely, I have to say that, visually speaking, it is the sort of book I appreciate, but do not find quite to my taste. Always getting into trouble, this Goldilocks had "a little more than too much" curiosity. Child's narrative, which has a friendly, conversational tone, expands upon the original tale (at least, as I remember it, anyway), giving its heroine a back-story - she's sent into the forest by her mother to find firewood - and a definite character. Lauren Child, author of the popular Clarice Bean and Charlie and Lola series, here turns her attention to the traditional story of Goldilocks, a curious little girl who happens upon the home of the Three Bears while walking in the forest one day. I also loved her The Princess and the Pea, which is done with paper dolls. I wish Lauren Child would do more of these miniatures books. The three bears are stuffed animal bears (and, my, papa bear, what big teeth you have though Mamma and Small Bear are very cute!) and they live in an absolutely darling house in the middle of a real wood in England (a copse of baby trees that ended up being the perfect scale height when it came time to do the photo shoot!) I love miniatures and these are just wonderful, so full of detail and they fit the story perfectly. Oh, and, yes, Goldilocks here is portrayed, not through usual illustrations, but as a doll inhabiting a world of real-life miniatures. I really enjoyed the little quirks and charms that make this story delightfully unique despite being a retelling of a very familiar tale. Ack! And, I've gotta say, the Goldilocks doll is a bit creepy despite her lovely curls, cute polkadot dress and the precious red shoes. Goldilocks here is not so overtly obnoxious as she is in many other versions, but she has a subtle sort of naughty streak that is nevertheless quite unpleasant (in a love-to-read-about-it sort of way!) She is that dangerous, deceptive sort of person who rationalizes everything in her own head to make anything she wants to do seem a-okay. I love the gentle wink at the audience, as the author assumes that we have heard the story before (but, of course, we would love to hear it again) and the storytelling here is just charming. What fun! Here is a delightful retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It finished third in the public vote from that shortlist. For the 50th anniversary of the Medal (1955–2005), a panel named it one of the top ten winning works, which comprised the shortlist for a public vote for the nation's favourite. Her book I Will Not Ever Never Eat A Tomato won the 2000 Kate Greenaway Medal. Child gets her inspiration from other people's conversations or from seeing something funny happen. It was only when she came to write and illustrate the book Clarice Bean, That's Me that she decided to devote her time to writing and illustrating books for children, which combines her fascination for childhood and her talent for designing and creating. After attending two Art Schools, she travelled for six months, still unsure about which career to embark upon.īefore writing and illustrating children's books Child started her own company 'Chandeliers for the People' making lampshades. She has always been interested in the many aspects of childhood, from gazing into toy shop windows to watching American children's shows from the 1960s. She was the UK Children's Laureate from 2017-19.Ĭhild grew up in Wiltshire as the middle child of three sisters and the daughter of two teachers. Lauren Child MBE is an English author and illustrator.
